It is merely one of the myriad of alternatives out there. Indeed, if I were you, I would skip the USB interface altogether and get modules that work with FireWire like the MOTU 828 digital audio interface. Since you have the Sony Laptop, you should build your studio around it. Don't waste more money on another desktop PC. Your Sony has 2 USB ports and 1 Firewire port. How about distributing the data load across these ports? Transfer your high volume digital audio data via the Firewire port and use one of the USB ports to transfer MIDI data. This will give you a more stable setup. There are plenty of USB MIDI interfaces. You could use Cubase VST to sequence/manage/edit all your MIDI and Audio data inside your computer.
